How to Hire a Go-to-Market Strategy Consultant

Hire a go-to-market (GTM) consultant with direct experience in your specific motion — product-led growth, sales-led growth, and channel/partnership-led growth require fundamentally different playbooks. A consultant whose background is enterprise sales-led GTM is often a poor fit for a self-serve SaaS product, and vice versa.

Illustration for how to hire a go-to-market strategy consultant
Typical rate range$150–$400/hr for freelance GTM consultants; $5,000–$25,000+ for a full GTM strategy engagement depending on scope and company stage

How to vet a specialist

Ask for examples of GTM plans they built for companies at a similar stage and in a similar business model (B2B vs. B2C, PLG vs. sales-led) to yours
Confirm whether they will just deliver a strategy document or also help with execution and iteration — a plan that never gets implemented delivers no value
Look for a consultant who asks detailed questions about your customer, market, and unit economics before proposing a motion, rather than pitching a generic framework immediately
Ask how they define and validate product-market fit before scaling any GTM motion — launching a GTM strategy before fit is confirmed usually wastes budget
Check their comfort with your specific channel mix (outbound sales, paid acquisition, partnerships, content) rather than a one-size-fits-all approach

Questions to ask

Ask these in any initial consultation to quickly separate strong candidates from weak ones.

1.What go-to-market motion would you recommend for my business, and why?

Why it matters: A specific, reasoned recommendation — tied to your customer type, price point, and sales cycle — shows real diagnostic thinking. A generic answer that could apply to any company is a red flag.

2.How will we know within the first 90 days whether the GTM approach is working?

Why it matters: A strong consultant defines concrete leading indicators (pipeline generated, activation rate, CAC by channel) upfront, rather than asking you to wait months before evaluating results.

3.Have you worked with companies at our stage before, and what were the outcomes?

Why it matters: GTM strategy for a pre-revenue startup differs enormously from GTM strategy for a company scaling from $5M to $20M ARR. Stage-specific experience is a better predictor of fit than years of general experience.
